Real Madrid was founded in 1902 in Madrid, Spain. It is a very successful club with 33 La Liga titles, 19 Copa del Rey trophies, 13 European Cups and 2 UEFA Cups. Real Madrid has been the most supported club in Madrid for most of its history, especially during its rivalry with Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid.
The team was very successful at the beginning of its era with four consecutive Copa del Rey championships from 1905 to 1908. After World War II, Real Madrid struggled to recover but built a new stadium, Santiago Bernabéu, the club received a many talented players who wanted to play on the biggest stage at that time. Real Madrid also won the first five European Cups played. During General Franco's reign over Spain, they were given many unfair favors. Real Madrid fans deny rumors that the club was successful only because of Franco and are very sensitive to such accusations.
During the 80s and 90s, Real Madrid struggled to be one of the best teams in the world. They finally ended their 32-year drought and won their seventh European Cup in 1998. When Florentino Pérez took over this club, he formed an all-star team called Los Galacticos. This team was made up of Zinedine Zidane, Luís Figo, David Beckham, Christiano Ronoldo and Robert Carlos. While Florentino Pérez bought all these famous players, he put the club in a huge debt that they are still trying to get out of. The city of Madrid has helped the team financially since the team went into debt for 659 million pesos. Today, the head coach is Zinedine Zidane. The club lost to Chelsea 2-0 in May and were disqualified from the UEFA Champions Cup.
